Sunny Day
We woke up very late to a beautifully sunny day. We decided to mostly hang around the house today, cook some food, and finish laundry. That may not sound like vacation, but for us, doing a few chores is relaxing. Jim especially loves cooking, so it’s not really a chore. He started chicken braised in creamy red wine sauce … 🤤

Kristi took down the last of the laundry and got it folded and put away. She also fed the cats. 😁 Yes, this place has cats too. The owner told us we could give them scraps if we wanted to. We gave them some of the chicken trimmings from the dinner preparations. We had instant new best friends.

In the afternoon, we decided to take a walk back to town and check out the whaling museum. In the late 19th century up until the early 1980’s whaling was a big industry here on Pico. The factory where they used to process all of the whale blubber is now a museum. It was pretty interesting.

It was a very short excursion. We were only gone a few of hours. But we did get to see the other end of town. We did stop at the grocery store and pick up a few things we forgot yesterday … and sat in front and had a cold drink.

We had a fairly early dinner as we skipped lunch in favor of a cheese snack … we picked up an aged cheese from São Jorge — known for its cheese. It has a strong, nutty and slightly spicy flavor. It went well with apples.

We decided to make a white sangria for dinner. Sangria is just as popular in Portugal as it is in Spain. Our favorite was in Lisbon, but our homemade was pretty good.

We had the chicken braised in a creamy red wine sauce, boiled potatoes, red pepper salad, and cookies and pastries from the local bakery for dessert.
The birds on the islands are incredible. A variety of songs can be heard from every direction all day long. Jim caught some kind of finch singing his heart out … he’s a little guy near the top of the pole in the center of the screen.
It was sunny and clear all day long. We had nice views of São Jorge across the water. We are supposed to have wind tomorrow … we shall see what happens.
