On to Terceira!
We left our Lisbon hotel at 8:25 this morning, opting for a €20 Uber to the airport rather than the €4 Metro — which included a 1/4 mile hike to the station. The door-to-door service was greatly appreciated, even with the additional cost. Did you know you can now arrange Uber pick up a day in advance? We only Uber occasionally, so not sure how long it’s been available, or maybe we’ve just been clueless — it was very convenient and worked like a charm.

The Azores is a volcanic archipelago about 800 miles west of continental/mainland Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean. Many, if not most, of the Portuguese immigrants to the Central Valley of CA are from the Azores. We will be staying some days on Terceira in Angra do Heroísimo — the historic capital (and a UNESCO World heritage site) of the islands — population 13,000. We will also stay on Pico, home to the highest point in Portugal. From Pico we may visit two of the other closeby, small islands.
We totally lucked out and will be in Angra for their big yearly festival called Sanjoaninas.
We arrived in Terceira about an hour late because our airplane had a flat tire. It had to be fixed before we left Lisbon. But we arrived to what appears to be an Atlantic island paradise. We are so fortunate in that we have some friends who have a home on Terceira and live here during the summer. Linda and David picked us up at the airport and took us to where we will be staying. After we got checked in to our place, we did a little grocery shopping and then they took us back to their home for wine and snacks… And a wonderful dinner.

All we did was eat, drink wine, and enjoy the view together. Thank you Linda and David for welcoming us to the island and for your gracious hospitality.
